Sittilingi Panchayat, TN

This tribal village panchayat in Tamil Nadu has been responding effectively to the spread of the pandemic.

The moment the announcement of the pandemic was made, the Panchayat President Ms Madheswari called for an urgent meeting of the team including the PHC, Tribal Hospital and other Govt departments.

Teams from Tribal Hospital made frequent visits in autorickshaws to all the villages and educated on Covid preventive measures. Panchayat employees marked lines around water taps and ration shops to ensure physical distancing.

All shops were closed except those serving essentials. All migrants who had returned were listed and home quarantined. If they report with symptoms, immediately referred to Salem. The Tribal Hospital has a separate fever OPD, and only emergency surgeries or admissions were taken in. Masks stitched by local tailors (who received an income through this) were promoted in all villages. A token system was instituted for distributing ration with date and time, so that no more than 15 people were present in any given hour. Hand-washing was enforced. Some villages impose a fine of Rs 500/- if you enter them without washing your hands. Whatsapp group of more than 500 distributed in amongst all villages so that daily news update is shared and spread amongst villagers. Illegal liquor shops were forcibly closed by youth and random police patrolling.
